The 2014 National Curriculum for Mathematics aims to ensure that all children:
• Become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics
• Are able to reason mathematically
• Can solve problems by applying their Mathematics
Within our Federation, these skills are embedded within Maths lessons and developed consistently over time. We use the Power Maths scheme from Reception to Year 6 and in KS1 we use the Mastery In Number scheme to establish mathematical fluency and confidence.
We are committed to ensuring that children are able to recognise the importance of Maths in the wider world and that they are also able to use their mathematical skills and knowledge confidently. We want all children to enjoy Mathematics and to experience success in the subject, with the ability to reason mathematically. Through using the guiding principles of maths mastery through the CPA model (concrete, pictorial, abstract) we enable the children to find success within mathematics by taking small steps through every maths concept that is taught. It is regularly linked to real-life contexts and the children are encouraged to use a variety of representations and variations in order to have a full and deep mathematical understanding.
At our schools, we recognise that sometimes additional support is required, and this is provided through appropriate resources, adult support and further intervention. Intervention programmes are provided through the Mastery in Number KS1 programme to give children support with their mathematical fluency.
